Austin and Dallas Corporate Events: Craft Brewed Energy for Hospitality Suites and Receptions
Texas doesn't do small receptions.
A Dallas hospitality suite during a big trade show can go from twelve people to ninety in the time it takes the bartender to restock the ice. An Austin company party starts on a patio, wanders inside, and somehow ends up on a rooftop. Everybody's friendly, everybody's moving, and everybody already has a drink in hand.
Which is great. Until you realize the room is full of people who only talk to the coworkers they walked in with.
I'm Derek, HUBB to just about everyone, and that exact problem is what I solve for corporate events in Austin and Dallas.
The room has energy. It just needs somewhere to go.
Let's be honest. Some corporate entertainment is background noise. A band in the corner, a photo booth nobody uses after the first hour, a playlist doing its best.
Close-up sleight of hand is the opposite. It happens six inches from a guest's drink, in their own hands, with three strangers leaning in to see it. Two minutes later those strangers are arguing about how it worked. That's a conversation your team didn't have to force.
That's what I mean by an activation. Not something to watch from across the room. Something that pulls people together.
Why it fits Texas rooms so well
I learned this craft in real bars and breweries. I call it Craft Brewed Magic, and it's built for loud, crowded, drink-in-hand rooms where people are standing, mingling, and not about to sit down for anything.
That describes a lot of Austin. Taprooms, backyard-style venues, rooftop bars, tech offices with a keg in the kitchen. Craft Brewed Magic feels at home there.
Dallas tends to dress it up. Downtown hotel ballrooms, Uptown restaurant buyouts, client dinners where the guest list matters. Same craft, sharper suit. The Art of Deception scales up nicely when the room is a little more polished.
Four ways I usually run it
Every room is different, so I keep the formats simple:
Strolling: I move through the crowd during cocktail hour and hit small groups one at a time. Perfect for an Austin patio party or a busy Dallas reception.
Close-up: intimate tables or small circles at a client dinner. The guest list you actually want to impress gets the front row.
Bar: I set up behind a bar and guests drift over between drinks. Great for a trade show suite where people come and go all night.
Rotating: I work table to table during dinner so nobody feels left out.
I wrote a longer breakdown of these in strolling, close-up, bar, or rotating, and the full list is on my services page.
Conference week? Put a reset on the agenda.
Dallas and Austin both host a lot of multi-day conferences, and day two always hits a wall around mid-afternoon.
That's what The Mental Refresh is for. It's a session on your agenda, built as an alternative to yet another keynote, where attendees step into a speakeasy-style break with close-up sleight of hand and walk back into the afternoon actually awake. I wrote about it here, and the details live on my Event Planners page.
A little about who's showing up
I'm based in Southern California and travel for corporate events nationwide. Every Sunday you'll find me doing Magic at the Library in the Library Bar at the Hollywood Roosevelt. I took first place in the Magic Castle's Strolling Showdown, and I've performed at Chicago Magic Lounge and House of Cards in Nashville.
On the corporate side, I've brought close-up experiences to events for Amazon, Meta, and Universal Studios. I've also produced my own nights, Beer & Magic and Enchanted Escape, so I know how a room should feel from the planner's side too.
It's the same approach I've written about for Scottsdale and Las Vegas. Different city, same goal: guests who leave talking about the night instead of the traffic on I-35.
A few planner notes
Travel: one vendor, one contact. I fly in, I handle my own setup, and it's self-contained.
Room size: from an intimate client dinner to a packed suite or a full reception.
Timing: cocktail hour is the sweet spot, but I'll build around whatever your run of show needs.
Drinks: works with or without drink service.
Let's talk about your night
If you've got an Austin or Dallas event on the calendar, send me the basics: date, city, headcount, and what kind of room it is. I'll tell you which format fits.
